Local residents attend 105th conference of Daughters of the American Revolution
The following local residents recently attended the 105th New York State Conference of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Albany, New York. Shown in the photo, left to right, are Mary Menks of Massapequa, Peg Crichton of Amityville, Janice Todt of Amityville and Kay Dewar of Massapequa. All four ladies are members of Col. Gilbert Potter Chapter, Amityville, and were dressed in Colonial costumes for the Patriot’s dinner. Kay Dewar and Peg Crichton were delegates and Mary Menks was an alternate. Caroline D’Antonio also attended but due to personal reasons had to leave the conference early. Jancie Todt is a new member of the Chapter, and this was her first visit to a state conference.
The first fall meeting of the Chapter was held at the home of the Regent Jeannette Krauszer and was well attended. The speaker, Joan Ward, spoke about national defense, but specifically what we as citizens should encourage when we travel. She spoke of visiting eight countries prior to September 11, traveling primarily in Europe by bus from one country to another. She said she was rarely asked to show her passport. and when she did show it, the picture inside could have been Shirley Temple or Bette Midler for all the police or inspectors cared, she said. However, as soon as she crossed the border into Switzerland, the military police boarded the bus, checked three identifications for every passenger, and scrutinized them thoroughly.
Also of note in Switzerland, is that there is a noise curfew from 11 p.m., for single family homes and 10 p.m. for multiple family homes, she told the group. Not even showering or flushing is permitted under the curfew.
