Let there be peace on earth Dear Editor:

On September 11, I like the rest of the world was stunned by the current events. I wanted to put some normalcy in my life and thought a ride to Gilgo would help. I was not alone. There were many people on the beach. Due to tropical storm Erin blowing out to sea, there was a riptide, it seemed like every surfer from Long Island was there. People watched and talked thinking of better times. Later I went and had a soda and sat on a picnic bench and watched the smoke billow from where the Towers had been. Gilgo...September 11, 2001

by Dewitt Gardner

And the waves will keep crashing upon our shores

Till time stands still and the earth is no more

The gulls swoop and caw a song in joy of their flight

Orange-winged Monarchs flit and play with delight

Blissful surfers riding the crest of the perfect wave

A golden day that God has made!

But what has happened across the bay?

Chaos and turmoil have come our way

Strong fortresses have tumbled,

Buildings have crumbled

Death and destruction are all around

Screams, cries and tears, the only sound

The world as we knew it has changed...

Changed in an instant by the deranged!

Why did it happen? Who will it gain?

What is the result? Only pain, pain, pain!

Where will it end, this madness and strife,

Till we all are finished, and there is no life?

What have we done, to this planet of ours?

Let there be peace, both near and far

For the waves will keep crashing upon our shores,

Till time stands still, and the earth is no more...
