Guest Columnist Martin H. Schwartz Let’s get into the political Arena

For this column I have interviewed Babylon Republican Supervisor candidate, Paul Sauberer.

Assessments

An increase in the bond rating, due to competent management in Town Hall, as opposed to a rating increase with huge tax hikes, will do the same as expanding the assessment level of the Town. This is because it will reduce the amount of interest we pay, freeing up money that does not currently provide tangible goods and services. It will come without increasing the burden to the taxpayers.

The OBI

It would be a mistake to try and sanction a commercial development such as a bed and breakfast, even if it is owned by the Town. To do so would be the first step down the slippery slope into turning our oceanfront into an overdeveloped stress of high-rises

Background

Age 38; married with two children. Resident of North Babylon for 14 years. Bachelor’s degree from University of Dallas in politics and history. Consultant for an administration firm for class action settlements.

Top Issues (First 100 Days If Elected)

There are three mains one: 1) A top to bottom audit of the Town’s finances, 2) Roads - they have been neglected for too long. The biggest question is why highway taxes have risen steadily. 3) The Park System-analyzing the Overlook Beach fiasco.

Main Differences Between Councilman Bellone and Myself

I’m from a management perspective. I look to prioritize what can be done with the tax dollars. Everything in Babylon is in a crisis mode. With the Beach lease deal, the Town lost $17 million. The State Comptroller told us that this shouldn’t have been done. Regarding Bonding - I believe more in fiscal responsibility.

The Clinton Presidency

The Clinton Presidency will be remembered as better than it would have been, if there hadn’t been a Republic Congress to balance him out. To make that relevant on the Town level, we need an effective two-party system and should be skeptical of one party having a 5-0 domination of the Town Board.

Taxes

They have gone up 50 percent over the last three years. We need an audit to analyze the need for the increases.

The Republican Slate

It’s a young, energetic slate including Lindsay Henry (Babylon Village) and Ed McCabe North Babylon). We are well prepared to do the actual job of managing the government.

Message to Babylon Democratic Committee

You are excellent politicians, although lacking in management skills. You need to be fiscally prudent and learn more about how to govern responsibly.

To Run the Campaign Effectively

It will take a commitment and people contact including grass roots organizing. We will be outspent by quite a bit. We have to get out our message to all the people.
