She’s only a sophomore, but already Kia Wright has achieved something no other Copiague female athlete has achieved. Recently, she scored her 1,000th point as a Girls Varsity basketball player.

In honor of this special event, Kia was recognized at a recent basketball game. She was presented with a plaque, as well as the game ball commemorating this outstanding achievement.

"She raises the level of play for everyone on the team," stated Girls Varsity Coach Carole Olsen. "While her scoring is impressive, even more impressive is her average eight assists per game. She just keeps getting better and better."

Kia has been playing basketball since 5th grade, as a member of the Copiague Youth League, and has been a varsity player since the 8th grade. She was also the only freshman named to Newsday’s Long Island Team. For the 2000-2001 season, Kia is averaging 31 points, 9 assists, 7 steals, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game. She is also Co-Captain of the team.

"Kia has just been a great boost for Copiague basketball, especially the girls’ program," commented Copiague Coordinator of Athletics, Pete Cesare. "The young players look up to her, and we hope she can guide the team to the best record it has ever had."

Beyond the goals she has set for herself at Copiague High School, Kia plans to earn a college degree, and play professional basketball in the WNBA. For this sophomore superstar, both goals are sure to become a reality.
