Amityville smart scholars get a jump on college

Edmund W. Miles Middle School (EWMMS) students in the Amityville School District are the beneficiaries of a NYS grant-funded program, backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, entitled the Smart Scholars grant.

Approximately 85 colleges and universities set up shop at Amityville Memorial High School in October for an evening college fair. Students and parents spoke with admissions consultants for two- and four-year institutions from throughout the country, both public and private, some churchaffiliated and some specializing in the needs of ethnic minority students.

Northwest Elementary School in Amityville opened its doors to students and their parents one December evening for Winter Wonderland, an event designed to celebrate the holiday season and allow young children to enjoy arts and crafts and other fun activities with their families.

Members of the Copiague Middle School Student Council, National Junior Honor Society and Builder’s Club attended the Kids in Action Conference on Fri., Dec. 2, at Farmingdale State College. The theme of this year’s conference was “Anti-Bullying,” and more than 2,500 students from over 40 districts were represented.

Kindergarten students in Teressa Brown’s class at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in Copiague put their artistic talents to the test this December. Collaborating with Ms. Brown, parent volunteers and their fellow classmates, the students created edible holiday trees.

Edmund W. Miles Middle School band members to perform in Hofstra Honors Band Festival

Eleven members of the Edmund W. Miles Middle School seventh-grade band performed in the Hofstra Middle School Honors Band Festival this year. Selection for this group was by invitation and teacher recommendation. Performers in the festival included the top seventh-grade band musicians from Nassau and Suffolk counties, along with the 110 members of the Hofstra University Symphonic Band.
