Corporal John Nunez takes port visit at Dubai Marine Corps Lance Cpl. John Nunez, son of Maria and Jose Nunez of Copiague, and fellow marines and sailors took part in a community relations project during a port visit to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on a scheduled deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism while assigned to the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) homebased at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Volunteers worked at City of Hope, a women’s shelter in Jumeirah. They painted hallways and performed general repair work, while some of the servicemembers played with the children staying at the home. MEUs are built around a reinforced infantry battalion, a combat service support element, a reinforced helicopter squadron and a command element. With its complement of fully integrated air and ground forces, Nunez’s unit is ready to conduct real-world operations including amphibious, helicopter and boat raids, tactical recovery of aircraft and personnel, noncombatant evacuation operations and humanitarian assistance operations. Nunez is a 1999 graduate of Copiague High School and joined the Marine Corps in May 2003.
