Joseph "Pepi" Cardino,
Construction company owner by Tiffany Elliott A well-known Copiague contractor and classic car collector, Joseph Cardino truly lived the "American Dream," according to his son Joseph Jr., Joseph Giuseppe Cardino died August 29, 2005 at North Shore University Hospital. He was 73 years old. He immigrated to the U.S. from Calabria, Italy at the age of 16 without knowing the language. His hard work enabled him to later raise a large family and start a successful business, at the age of 25, Cardino Construction. He was married to his wife, Maria for 46 years, and they raised four children, spending many weekends in a vacation home they had in Monticello. He lived in Copiague for 60 years. Mr. Cardino was a familiar sight in Copiague, either driving around one of his many classic cars or his company panel trucks that had his name emblazoned name on the side. According to his son, Joseph Jr., his dad loved to show off his classic Corvettes at local car shows where he won numerous awards. Because of his genial nature, he was affectionately known as the "mayor" of Copiague by those who knew him and could usually be found regaling humorous stories to people gathered around him. To his children, he will be remembered, respected and loved. Mr. Cardino was an active member of St. Anthony’s of Elmont, a benevolent society founded by his grandfather that donated money to charities near and far. He was also a member of other civic, business and charitable organizations as he believed in "giving back" after becoming so successful, according to his family. Mr. Cardino leaves behind his wife Maria; his three sons: Joseph and his wife Denise of Copiague, Natale and his wife Faith of Copiague and Frank and his wife Kimberly of Lindenhurst; his daughter Lisa Doria of Syosset; his grandchildren: Joseph III, Gina Marie, Steven, Rhiannon, Angelina, Paedyn, Vanessa, Christina, Nicole, Joseph Marco and Dino Jr.; his siblings Frank and Dominic. His sister Assunta predeceased him. Mr. Cardino reposed at D’Andrea Brothers Funeral Home, 99 Oak Street, Copiague. A funeral mass was held on September 3, 2005 at Our Lady of the Assumption R.C. Church followed by entombment at St. Charles Cemetery.
