First United Methodist installs new pastor
On Sunday, September 11, the Rev. Dr. Louise Stowe-Johns was installed as pastor of the First United Methodist Church on Broadway in Amityville. The church was established in 1792, eight years after Methodism became a denomination. Since 1848, there have been 40 pastors. Stowe-Johns becomes the 41st. She is a sixth generation Methodist pastor. She follows the Rev. Erik Rasmussen who was assigned to Bellport United Methodist Church, July 1. Rev. Stowe-Johns was welcomed into the midst of the church family in a moving installation ceremony. She comes to Amityville from the Community United Methodist Church in East Norwich, New York, where she served for five years. September 11 was also a day of remembrance. As a community of faith the congregation remembered the victims and families of the World Trade Center, Pentagon and Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, the war in the Middle East and those affected by Hurricane Katrina. A native of Tennessee, Rev.Stowe-Johns received her seminary education from Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, New Jersey. She currently lives in Rockville Centre with her husband, the Rev. Dr. R. Dick Johns, pastor of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. They have two children, a daughter, Michele, who is attending seminary at Claremont School of Theology in California, and a son, Christopher, who works in Washington, D.C. for the federal government. In addition to pastoral work, Rev. Stowe-Johns has taught art and drama in public school, participated in radio and television religious program, served as a mediator of community disputes and criminal cases, and been an active community member wherever she lives.
