Grand re-opening of historic carousel to be held Bernadette Castro, Commissioner of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce the grand re-opening of the historic wooden carousel at Hempstead Lake State Park. The carousel was created by the legendary M.C. Illions at Coney Island in 1916 and features 36 horses and two chariots, all hand carved with the tails of the wooden houses comprised of real horse hair. The celebration also features the grand opening of a newly built facility building featuring brand new interior and exterior bathrooms as well as an event hall which can be used for children’s birthday parties, corporate events, and private parties. The celebration will be held Saturday, October 8 and Sunday, October 9, 11 am until 3 pm. Both days will feature free rides on the antique carousel, musical entertainment, funny photos, old fashioned games from the era of the carousel, clowns, and more.There is no entry fee for the festivities but a $6 Vehicle Use Fee will be in effect.
