Doppy Open golf tournament another success

The 24th annual Doppy Open Golf Tournament sponsored by the Tobay Beach lifeguards was held recently at the Cherry Creek Golf Links in Riverhead.

The tournament was a huge success as 83 golfers participated on a beautiful day in the 18 hole Best Ball format for the ninth consecutive year. The event is dedicated to the memory of the late George "Doppy" Doherty, a former lifeguard captain who coached golf at Massapequa High School and wrestling at Berner High School for 18 years until his death in 1974. Doppy was a dynamic teacher and coach and many of the participants in the outing include relatives, friends and former athletes. Proceeds from the annual event go towards a scholarship for a Massapequa High School senior wrestler. Also, the proceeds from this year’s event will go to the World Trade Center Relief Fund, to help the many families affected by the tragic events this past September. To date, the tourney has raised $17,000.

The winning pair included Dan Lannak and Don Rutherford who shot an impressive 71 for low gross honors. Lannak, a former MHS golfer and wrestler won an unprecedented sixth title and Rutherford captured his first championship. They edged the tandem of perennial contender Scott Angus and partner Ed Kaercher who finished with a round of 74.

The Low Net Award went to Steve Conte and Steve Marmond as they carded a 74 and the Low Nine Hold winners were Gary Mims and Gerard Ciofalo, who posted a 37 on the back nine and finished with a round of 74.

Other top pairs included: former champion John Doherty and Bob Lohmann (75), Joe Dempsey and Gerard Ciofalo Jr. (75), Pat Linehan Jr. and Rob Kaffl (76), 16-year-old juniors Joe Compitello and Ed Contessa (76), father-son team of Bill Warner Sr. and son Billy Jr. (77) and Joe Genovese and Todd Schlitt (77). Defending champions Gary Jaeger and Ed Hoffman finished with a round of 81.

Special honors went to Ed Contessa who had a 278-yard shot on the fourth hole to capture one of the longest drive awards and Joe Genovese unleashed a 292-yard blast on the 15th hole to garner the other longest drive award. Closest to the pin honors went to Don Rutherford when his ball landed within one foot on the sixth hold and Rich Pascle won the closest to the pin on the 17th hole when his ball landed within four feet of the pin. Veteran Tobay Beach lifeguard Bob Lambert won the Sportsmanship Award.
