Daughters of the American Revolution take a pilgrimage to Gibson-Mack-Holt house

Seventeen members of Col. Gilbert Potter Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution traveled on pilgrimage to the Gibson-Mack-Holt house in Bay Shore this past month. The newly elected president of the Bay Shore Historical Society, Robert Balletta escorted the ladies on a guided tour of the house. The past president, Frank Manhardt showed a video telling the story of the home built in 1820. The house has been completely reconditioned and restored for the public to enjoy and is open to the public Tuesdays and Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 22 Maple Ave., Bay Shore.

The ladies enjoyed browsing through one of the most exciting gift shops on Long Island, stocked with collectibles and antiques. Following the tour the ladies enjoyed a Dutch Treat luncheon at the famous John Thomas Inn in Bay Shore.

Something of interest: An "X" for a KISS: our custom of putting Xs at the end of letters and notes to symbolize kisses grew out of medieval legal practices. In order to indicate good faith and honesty in those days, the sign of St. Andrew...a cross...was placed after the signature on all important documents. Thereafter contracts and agreements were not considered binding until each signer added St. Andrew’s cross after his name. Then he was required to kiss the document to further guarantee faithful performance of his obligations. The cross was drawn hurriedly and after it was tilted it looked much like the letter "X."
