•Literacy Volunteers of American-Suffolk County, Inc. is seeking volunteers to tutor adults in the community who desire to learn to read, write and/or speak English. You will meet with an adult learner(s) for two to three hours a week in the library for at least one year. A 24-hour tutor-training workshop is required. •The French film Children of Paradise will be shown Saturday, October 20, 5 p.m. A French dinner will be served.

•A young adults chocolate workshop will be held Saturday, October 20, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Chocolateer Trish Pacholik will lead you in this workshop.

•John Miller will offer a program in Halloween pumpkin carving, Wednesday, October 24, 7 to 9 p.m. All materials will be provided. Registration is for Program No. 739.

•On Wednesday, October 24, noon, the movie The Wedding Planner will be shown as the senior movie. Bring your lunch; coffee, tea and cake are supplied. No registration is required.

•The Amityville Public Library’s Board of Trustees’ meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 18, 7:30 p.m.

•Certified Financial Planner Brian C. Vail of American Express Financial Advisors will be at the Amityville Public Library, Monday, October 22, 11 p.m. to present Long-Term Planning: Options, Independence and Financial Security. Vail will help you explore your options in regards to preserving the value of your estate for your family, assessing the cost of long-term care and maintaining your financial independence and quality of life. This program is free of charge and registration can be done in person at the library.

•The Amityville Public Library is offering a course in basic italic of the art of calligraphy Tuesdays, October 23 and 30 and November 6, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. All three sessions must be attended. The instructor is Angelamae Abbene of the New York Institute of Technology and program director for Island Scribes. Participants should bring a smock, rag, pen or pencil and small plastic T-square if possible. A materials fee of $5 by check or money order payable to the Amityville Public Library is requested upon registration.
