Suffolk County Office for the Aging announces HMO termination meetings

The Suffolk County Office for the Aging will be sponsoring informational sessions in response to the withdrawal of several HMOs from the Medicare market in Suffolk County. the withdrawal of HIP, Aetna, Cigna, MDNY and PHS affects over 35,000 seniors in Suffolk County. Effective, January 1, 2001, Empire Blue Choice will be the only HMO in Suffolk County along with traditional fee-for-service Medicare.

Meetings will be held in Babylon, October 30, 1 to 3 p.m. at the Babylon Town Annex auditorium, 281 Phelps Ln. For information call 631-422-7642. In Islip the meeting will be held October 30, 10 a.m. to noon at the West Islip Senior Center, 90 Higbie Ln. For information call 631-893-8932.

There will be eight meetings scheduled throughout Suffolk County providing information to seniors on their health care coverage. Information will be provided on Medicare and Medigap coverage. Additionally there will be information on veterans’ health benefits and the New York State senior prescription plan (EPIC). Staff from the Suffolk County Office for the Aging and Suffolk’s Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) will be available to assist seniors with individual.

In addition to these meetings, the Suffolk County Office for the Aging and the Federal Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) are co-sponsoring meetings on November 14 in Riverhead and November 20 in Hauppauge. These two meeting will include representatives from Empire Blue Choice, the Suffolk County Department of Social Services, New York State Insurance Department, New York State Veterans Service Agency and the New York State EPIC Program.
